Dana Lookadoo spoke to Heather Lloyd-Martin’s SEO Copywriting Certification class on
March 27, 2013 to explain why and how optimizing for social media is important, especially if your goals of developing content are increasing audience engagement and going viral…and ranking! View the presentation below via SlideShare.
Why is social media important?
Topics covered the latest trends in social media, what’s being shared where, a ranking factors survey, and how the search engines are interpreting engagement signals to influence ranking. Included was a recent quote by Duane Forrester of Bing during the Search Police panel at SMX West:Duane Forrester of Bing discussing the impact of social media engagement signals on ranking
Maybe you say “the jury is out on how social affects SEO.” If that’s you, you still want your content to be shared and get traffic. If you don’t plan your social sharing snippet and optimize your page with the right code, your dreams of going viral with your content may flop (and probably will).
Bottom line: How you look in social is important!
Dana covered the “how” with tips on using Open Graph protocol, including use of the WordPress SEO plugin to help create those tags. Other best practices addressed how to optimize sharing of content on Facebook and Google+ as well as making tweets retweetable on Twitter. (Say that 3 times fast…)
SEO Copywriting Certification students got an overview of the Structured Social Sharing Formula presented at MozCon in July 2012. Resources included access to download an updated worksheet to help plan out each post and ideas for going viral.
What about you?
What are your best practices to ensure your killer content gets as many reshares, likes, and retweets as it deserves?
What about me? Glad you asked! It’s time to optimize this site and stop using the excuse of the “cobbler’s shoes!”
